During the latest Nintendo Direct dedicated to Donkey Kong Bananza, fans were treated to 15 minutes of gameplay, reveals, and a few exciting surprises—including a brief but unmistakable appearance by Diddy and Dixie Kong. Their inclusion confirms that the fan-favorite duo will return in the upcoming title, launching July 17.
The Donkey Kong franchise has long been a staple of Nintendo’s legacy, dating back to its arcade debut in 1981. After spawning classics like Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3, the series truly evolved with the release of Donkey Kong Country in 1994—a groundbreaking entry for the Super Nintendo that introduced modern platforming mechanics and iconic characters like Diddy Kong. The sequel, Diddy’s Kong Quest, later introduced Dixie, cementing their place in Nintendo history.
Following a decade-long hiatus after Tropical Freeze (2014), Donkey Kong Bananza signals a major revival for the series. While some leaks and early teases hinted at returning characters, many fans were still wondering if Diddy and Dixie would make the cut. That question was finally answered during the Direct.
Not only do Diddy and Dixie appear multiple times throughout the footage—they seem to play a significant role in the game. One standout moment even shows Diddy wearing a construction outfit, hinting at potential new mechanics or story elements.
Another key reveal from the Donkey Kong Bananza Direct was the confirmation of co-op gameplay—but with a twist that might catch fans off guard. While the game technically supports two players, the setup isn’t exactly what longtime Nintendo co-op fans might expect.
Player 1 takes control of Donkey Kong, while Player 2 plays as Pauline, who rides on Donkey Kong’s back and has significantly limited control and interaction. Compared to Nintendo’s usual track record of rich, engaging co-op experiences, this setup feels more passive and might leave some players wanting more.

Another fun surprise from the Direct: Donkey Kong Bananza is getting its own Amiibo, adding to Nintendo’s iconic toys-to-life lineup just in time for the game’s July 17 launch. Beyond character reveals, the presentation also highlighted deeper gameplay features—like a skill tree system that lets players enhance Donkey Kong’s health, strength, and more.
With classic characters returning, new mechanics introduced, and Amiibo support on deck, Donkey Kong Bananza is shaping up to be a worthy revival of the legendary series. And yes—Diddy and Dixie are officially back.
