Elden Ring Movie Director Reveals His Toughest Boss Fight (and It’s Exactly Who You Think)
Alex Garland, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Ex Machina and Civil War, is deep into his seventh playthrough of Elden Ring—and he’s finally named the boss that gave him the most trouble: Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
In an interview with IGN promoting his upcoming film 28 Years Later, Garland reflected on his experience with FromSoftware’s sprawling fantasy RPG, confirming what many Elden Ring players already know: Malenia is a nightmare.
“It’s Malenia who’s the tough one,” Garland said. “I’m now on my seventh playthrough of that game. I’ve leveled up, I’ve got lots of juice, and a cool sword, and stuff like that—and I just throw myself at them again and again and again.”
Garland likened the process to his old Dark Souls habits: “It’s not that you get better. It’s more like monkeys and typewriters—you just keep doing it, and eventually, one day they’re dead.”
Surprisingly, Garland didn’t struggle much with Elden Ring’s other heavy-hitter, Starscourge Radahn, calling the infamous gravity-wielding general “really easy.”
“I thought Radahn was quite easy,” he said. “As long as you activate the people who can assist you in that fight, they take off half his energy. You just finish him off. It’s all about those little summon signs.”
Garland is set to write and direct the upcoming Elden Ring film adaptation, produced by Bandai Namco, A24, and a lineup of industry heavyweights including Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, and DNA’s Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich.
While Garland didn’t spill any details about the film’s plot or characters, fans are already speculating. Will Malenia make the cut? Could Radahn stomp into theaters? For now, we know next to nothing about how closely the movie will follow the game—or how involved FromSoftware or director Hidetaka Miyazaki will be in the production.
Personally, a prequel focused on The Shattering feels like the smartest move for the big screen. But what do you think? Would you prefer a faithful retelling of the game’s story, or something new set in the Lands Between? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
